OIC promotes Road Safety in the UAE

Road-Safety-UAE-2018-v2

Oman Insurance Company is pleased to support Road Safety in the UAE by co-sponsoring the Shell Gold Star Initiative organised by Ciel Events. The road safety initiative ran from November 27 to November 29, 2018, across Dubai and Sharjah in collaboration with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai and the Sharjah Police.

Our Road Safety ambassador Andrew Brody, Head of Consumer Lines, had the pleasure of meeting some of our delighted winners this morning and congratulating them in person.

As per the mechanics of the promotion, motorists are tailed as they drive around the city, to determine if they follow simple road rules like using seat belts, respect of speed limits and minding lane discipline rules. Safe drivers thus recognised are then presented with a cash prize of AED 1000 to reward their safe road habits on-the-spot.

Observing Road Safety trends in the UAE, Andrew Brody, comments, “Over the past four years, Oman Insurance Company has seen an average annual decrease of 6% in the number of motor claims related to road accidents, which is a clear indication that various government initiatives rolled out over the years are making their mark, raising awareness and encouraging residents in the UAE to follow simple road safety rules. Implementation of mandates, like the use of seat belts and child safety seats, stricter penalties for reckless driving or traffic violations have resulted in more alert motorists.  For example, when drivers are aware that exceeding the speed limit can bring on a fine of up to AED 3,000,  plus around 23 black points, and have their car impounded for up to 60 days, they are much more attentive to road safety rules. This subsequently results in fewer road incidents in the country. We hope initiatives like this one, that recognize and reward safe drivers on the spot, will encourage the wider community to adopt safe driving habits as well.”
